We are delighted to learn that the Royal Star & Garter care home in Solihull has been selected as a finalist for the 2009 Healthcare Design Awards for larger care homes.

The Royal Star & Garter is a charity caring for ex-service men and women. The new home in Solihull is a few minutes from the town centre and provides accommodation on two floors for 60 residents in four clusters of 15. The design objectives were achieved through an intensive briefing process between the client and the design team which involved the residents and staff of the existing home.

The residents rooms provide bed-head facilities on each wall allowing choice and flexibility for furniture layout. The wall mounted up-light has been carefully positioned and a booster is located above the bed for residents reading and clinical care.

Each room has two windows with splayed reveals maximising the the amount of natural light and a projecting bay window gives each resident their own personal seating space. The colour scheme is restful and domestic.

Entrances to all the rooms are set back from the corridor with plenty of space for furniture and features to personalise the space and entrance to the room, (Memory boxes, door knockers, framed pictures and furniture) promoting respect, privacy, choice and independence.

A lounge, bar, cafe, library and dining room located centrally and provide each group with an alternative space to meet and socialise with each other and visitors.

Residents enjoy sitting in the reception, the heart of the building, listening to the grand piano or watching the comings and goings of local community and visitors to the building.

The atrium voids link the ground and first floors increasing the sense of grandeur and maximising the natural light, and at the same time utilising the stack effect to provide natural ventilation of all the communal rooms, avoiding the need of comfort cooling.
